Minister Mwesigwa Rukutana Sent Back To Prison

State Minister for Labour Mwesigwa Rukutana is to spend eight more days prison after being remanded till September 15 2020.

Chief Magistrate of Ntungamo Sarah Kolya extended the bail application without providing any reasons as she only adjourned the ruling. Rukutana’s defence team however claim their client needs medical attention.

Yesterday Rukutana was remanded to Kakiika Prison, Kyamugorani in Mbarara on charges of attempted murder, malicious damage and theft of a gun.

The gun wielding minister was arrested on Saturday together with his four bodyguards following a violate exchange between the minister and supporters of his rival Naome Kabasharira in which a one Dan Rwiburingi was severely injured.

Charges:

On Monday, he arraigned before the grade one magistrate’s court in Ntungamo but none of his bodyguards was brought to court, neither has anything been said of them.

“Mwesigwa Rukutana and others still at large on September 5, 2020 at Kagugu village in Ntungamo district unlawfully attempted to cause the death of Daniel Rweburingi contrary to section 204(a) of the Penal Code Act,” the magistrate read the charges.

He was also charged with assault and causing bodily harm onto one of his victims, threatening violence and malicious damage.

Rukutana’s charges stem from a Saturday shooting incident in Ruhama, Ntungamo district in which one person was seriously injured and a motor vehicle damaged.
