Manchester United have finally woken up. Reports suggest they have now made RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano their transfer ‘priority’ after sealing a deal for Donny van de Beek.

The Dutch international is expected to complete a £40million move to Old Trafford later this week after agreeing personal terms over the weekend.

United and Ed Woodward have been criticised for their slow progress in the transfer window after a deal for Jadon Sancho collapsed and with their Premier League rivals making significant additions.

ESPN claim Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to find a suitable partner for Harry Maguire in the heart of United’s defence and has identified Upamecano as the primary target.

The 21-year-old – who impressed throughout Leipzig’s Champions League run to the semi finals – has just signed a contract extensiion until June 2023, which reportedly includes a release clause of €42million, which can be triggered at the end of the 2020-21 season.

But the report claims that United believe a deal could be struck in this window, before the October 5 deadline.

United expect to offload a number of defenders including Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, and with the reliability and fitness of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof questionable, Solskjaer is keen to add depth and quality in the centre-back position.
