Police Shoots Busoga United Goalkeeper, Lazarus Obelajo, Kills Colleague

Goalkeeper, Lazarus Obelajo attached to Uganda Premier League side, Busoga United is admitted to Jinja Main Hospital after being shot by police implementing curfew on the Lake Victoria Island of Kisima last night.

Eye witness, Billy Kyambadde says the shooting happened when the police got involved in a scuffle with passenger boat sailing past the curfew time, 7pm.

During the scuffle, one person was shot dead on spot as Obelajo, a goalkeeper attached to Busoga United survived with wounds after a bullet hit him in the lower abdomen.

The incident happened between 7 and 8 PM in Jinja off the Masese landing site as a passenger boat left for Kisima Island 2 from Kisima Island 1.

Lazarus Obelajo was rushed to Jinja Main Hospital by sympathizers who carried him for medical attention.

Doctors did a commendable job to stop the bleeding and extracting the bullet from his stomach and he is out of danger.

“Obelajo is out of danger and admitted at Jinja Main Hospital in Ward 9. More prayers are needed during his recovery period and such trying times”, Busoga United patron, Diana Nyago confirmed.

Obelajo is currently loaned to Buikwe Red Stars Football Club, featuring in the Buganda regional league (Third division).

Last year, he led Jinja Secondary School to second place in the national Copa Coca Cola football championship, as they lost 3-1 to St Mary’s SS Kitende at the Kakindu Stadium, Jinja.
