Paul Bakyenga, The Archbishop Emeritus of Mbarara Archdiocese has passed on at the age of 79.
Bakyenga died at Nasambya Hospital this Tuesday morning, July 18, where he was battling with health complications.
The late Archbishop was born on June 30, 1944 in Bumbaire, Igara – Bushenyi District and was ordained a priest on July 1971.
Paul Bakyenga was appointed Bishop in March 1989 and succeeded Bishop John Baptist Kakubi as the Bishop of Mbarara Archdiocese on November 23, 1991.
He was elevated to Archbishop on January 2, 1992 by Pope Paul II.
After serving for a long time, Bakyenga asked Pope Francis to let him rest. In April 2020, Pope Francis accepted Bakyenga’s resignation and appointed Auxiliary Bishop Lambert Bainomugisha as the Archbishop of Mbarara, Uganda.
