Speaker, Anita Among and her deputy, Thomas Tayebwa

As Ugandans continue to battle difficult economic times, speaker of Parliament Anita Among and her Deputy Thomas Tayebwa are set to receive new cars.

The parliament reportedly procured two Mercedes Benz S500 cars from the United Kingdom (UK) at a cost of UGX2.88Bn.

One of the two Mercedes Benz S500 cars is already in the country. The second vehicle is expected in the country before the end of the week.

The purchase of these vehicles has met a backlash from some government officials and the public describing it as unnecessary expenditure given the difficult economic times.

Anita Among and Thomas Tayebwa:

When Speaker, Jacob Oulanyah who passed away in Seattle, Washington, United States of America in March this year, the parliament went back to ballot.

Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament, Anita Annet Among who was Oulanyah’s deputy, resigned her position and stood for Speakership.

Thomas Tayebwa (Ruhinda County) also resgned as Government chief whip and contested for the deputy speaker position.

Anita Annet was voted Speaker of Parliament after garnering 401 votes against the 66 of her competitor, Hon. Asuman Basalirwa (Jeema, Bugiri Municipality).

Thomas Tayebwa defeated his Kioga County counterpart, Hon. Moses Okot P’Bitek to become Deputy Speaker.

Hon Tayebwa garnered 379 votes against the 82 obtained by MP Okot.
