Media personality James Onen, popularly known as Fatboy said socialite Sheilah Gashumba would be a nobody today if it was not for the sh50k that she rubbished on social media last year. According to him, media houses pay pennies because they also don’t make that much.

I mentioned this to Sheilah on Twitter responding to one of her tweets. I said to her it was a platform. Look at how far it has gotten her. It has given her a platform to become established as a media personality which then enabled her to grow into this powerful formidable influencer who commands so many followers and she has monetized that so she is paid a lot of money to endorse brands, services and products. If it was not for the sh50k, who knows, today we might never have heard of Sheilah Gashumba.

He noted though that much as the unpopular topic on media pay became public, people still show up to ask him for jobs but asks them if they are willing to volunteer. “These days I tell them if you want to volunteer, let’s talk. If you are getting sh50k be thankful because in other places they won’t afford to pay you more than that.”

He added that he believes in payment by exposure like it is being practiced in some places but one needs to be strategic because it can’t go on for 10 years.

Fatboy said all that while appearing on a podcast.
